ABOUT US:
Antibiotics (also known as wonder drugs) are one of the vital tools to fight and treat the disease-causing pathogens in humans and animals. However, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in both humans and animals have led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (also called as Superbug) that are difficult to treat and give a nightmare to the medical fraternity. Moreover, bacterial drug resistance is now a major global health issue and India is also no exception to this.
According to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, India has the highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, and many of the TB cases are multidrug-resistant or extensively drug-resistant. The misuse of antibiotics in India has also led to the emergence of other drug-resistant bacteria, such as those that cause urinary tract infections and pneumonia.
Efforts are being made to address the problem of drug resistance in India. The government has launched various initiatives, such as the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, to raise awareness about the issue and promote responsible use of antibiotics. Health professionals are also being trained to prescribe antibiotics more judiciously, and efforts are being made to improve sanitation and hygiene in the country.
